Joanne Speakman, Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Joanne Speakman lives in Yellowknife, NT and spent her childhood in Délı̨nę, a community on Great Bear Lake. Her experiences while camping and fishing, influenced Joanne’s decision to study biology. Recently, she graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Conservation Sciences. Throughout her studies, Joanne has done work related to conservation planning, water quality monitoring, and environmental research.

Joanne is a Sahtu Dene and she’s passionate about drawing from multiple perspectives, including traditional knowledge, to address issues such as climate change. In the future, Joanne plans to pursue graduate studies in Public Health to further understand the relationships between colonialism, the environment, and the well-being of Northerners, especially Aboriginal people. In her spare time, Joanne enjoys hiking, reading, sewing and trying out new recipes.
